Top Ranked Colleges And Universities In The United States
For this analysis, we decided to analyze student demographic data provided by the Ministry of Education to identify the top universities with the largest and smallest student populations. We use this data for all accredited institutions to avoid small sample sizes of more than 1,000 students.

For this analysis, we estimated the degree of diversity using the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI), a calculation that measures diversity, such as industry competitiveness or ecosystem biodiversity.
The least diverse colleges on the index score 1 (all students are of the same race). In our analysis, a university that combines five groups (White, Black, Hispanic, Asian, Other) that make up 20 percent of the population would score 0.20 and be considered the most diverse.
Among accredited schools, we found Hawaii Pacific University to be the most diverse, followed by Highline College and the New York Institute of Technology. Among these top-ranked schools, we have the highest percentage of black students (Spelman College), the highest percentage of Hispanic students (UCC-Caguas), the highest percentage of Asian students (Long Island Business School), and the largest percentage of white students (Kirias Joel’s Utah Mesivta).
Before proceeding to the results and analysis, it should be noted that there are many different methods for calculating diversity. This approach examines whether a school’s student population is demographically balanced without favoring a particular group. Other methods of calculating diversity give different results. Also, to make this analysis interesting, we looked at the top 100 schools. Outside of this elite group, there are thousands of other schools that may be better or worse than these schools in terms of diversity.

We begin the analysis with the top 100 most diverse schools according to the HHI index.
With an HHI score of 0.148, Hawaii Pacific University is the most demographically diverse accredited school with over 1,000 students. Hailin College ranks No. 2 on this measure of diversity, followed by New York Institute of Technology, Seattle Central College, and City College of Berkeley.
Schools that rank poorly on this diversity indicator are often dominated by one demographic group. To illustrate this point, let’s look at the schools ranked from highest to lowest by percentage of white student body.
Kiryas Joel’s Uta Mesivta, West Virginia Southern Community and Technical College, and United Talmudic Seminary all have white percentages above 98%, compared to an average of 51% for the top 100 schools. In this analysis, homogenous schools ranked poorly on the HHI diversity index. The most diverse schools according to the HHI ranking, such as Hawaii Pacific University, Hailin College and the New York Institute of Technology, typically have 22 percent white students.
Top 10 Universities In The United States (2021)
Among these top schools is the student body of Spelman College, an all-girls HBCU that is 97.4 percent Black. Hampton University has the second highest percentage of black students, followed by South Carolina State University, Alabama State University and Virginia State University.
The Central University of Colombia, Caguas, is ranked #1 among the top schools with the highest percentage of Hispanic students. Schools in Puerto Rico, Florida and Texas dominated the rankings. In fact, most of the top 25 schools with Hispanic students are in Puerto Rico.
Finally, here’s a look at which of the country’s top universities have the largest proportion of Asian students:
Long Island Business School has the largest proportion of Asian students at 51.77%. Most of the schools with the largest number of Asian students are in Guam, Hawaii, or California. Rounding out the top five are the University of Guam, Mission College, Honolulu Community College and Guam Community College.
